City of Fort Worth to Host National Softball Tournament

For the third consecutive summer, the City of Fort Worth will host a national softball tournament at Gateway Park sponsored by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA).  Last year, teams arrived for a 50&Over Men’s fast-pitch softball tournament from states that included California, Oklahoma, and Missouri.  On July 29 running through August  2, 2009, the City of Fort Worth will host a girls 14&Under National Softball Tournament.  This tournament was awarded at the ASA National Convention held in November of 2007.  With the help of the Sports Advisory Council, Fort Worth beat out hundreds of other cities for this honor.  The estimated economic impact of this tournament for the City of Fort Worth is expected to exceed $5 million.  “We are excited about showcasing our excellent facilities and outstanding staff on behalf of the Parks and Community Services Department and the Metro Fort Worth ASA,” says Athletic Coordinator/ASA Commissioner Brenda Grubbs.  Gateway Park has hosted numerous softball tournaments for over 26 years and was named as one of the top locations throughout the entire nation for the Women’s Olympic Gold Medal Team’s national tour held during the summer of 2008.  In addition, the Athletics Section received the prestigious “James Ferrel Award” from the ASA for hosting an exceptional national tournament back in September of 2008.

The Athletics Section of the Parks and Community Services Department hosted a dedication ceremony to open up a $4.73 million dollar soccer/rugby complex.  The funding for this project was provided by the Fort Worth Water Department which includes two soccer fields, one rugby field, electronic scoreboards, and bleacher covered seating.

The unique sports surface on these fields will allow unlimited play on a year round basis and the fields will frequently remain opened during inclement weather conditions due to their outstanding drainage system.  The availability of renting all three fields will vary from season to season.

However, these fields will be opened to all residents for both games and practices for the sports of  soccer (full size fields only), rugby, and flag football.  For pricing information on reserving these fields, please go to the reservations page or call 817-871-7690 for additional information.

3rd Annual FitFuture Kidsfest a Big Success!

The 3rd Annual Fitfuture Kidsfest was held on October 11, 2008 at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in Fort Worth.  The Athletics Section of the Parks and Community Services Department collaborated with a number of different agencies for the 2008 event that included the City of Fort Worth Public Health Department, the United Way of Tarrant County, the University of North Texas Science Center, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth.  The 2008 event served over 2,000 children and adults.  This FREE event was coordinated to educate families on the importance of nutrition, fitness, health, and overall wellness for children.  As a result of childhood obesity reaching epidemic proportions, the importance of this event for 2009 and beyond cannot be overstated.  With the continued help of the aforementioned agencies and the entire community of Fort Worth, we can continue in our quest to making healthy positive changes in children’s lives.  For additional information please visit the FitFuture website at www.FitFuture.com.
